IaOrana & Maeva!
I am happy to invite you and your group to compete in the 1 5th Anniversary
Tahiti Fête of San Jose 2005, to be held on July 2-4, 2005, at the
San Jose State University Event Center. To commemorate this 15th year, I
am creating a Tahitian Dance & Music Directors book highlighting the
contributions of our many Ra’atiras, directors, kumus and instructors,
from around the world, outside of Tahiti. We do not yet have a title for
the book, however it will feature a full-size photograph of each director
along with a bio and story. Those featured must have had or currently has
a group or halau. Both active as well as retired
directors will be highlighted. An information sheet is attached, Information
may also be found on our website.
Solo eliminations will be held the at the DoubleTree Hotel San Jose, the afternoon
of July 1st starting at 12:30 pm. Finalists will perform the next day at the
Event Center. Solo Dance Awards will be given the afternoon of Saturday, July
2nd, following the solo final competition. Application deadline for the Group
Division is April 2, 2005, and for Soloists, May 21, 2005. All groups and
soloists must fax or email me their “Intent to Enter” as soon as
possible, no later than March 5th. After June 21st, I will no longer be in
Hilo. I will be in San Jose and staying at the San Jose DoubleTree Hotel.
We will continue the three new categories added in the last two years ---
Ori Rau (contemporary) ‘Ote‘a and Tamarii Drumming and Tamarii ‘Ote‘a
for youngsters 13 years old or younger. We have just one division. Every year
the event goes into overtime and as a result, new solutions have been put in
place to help save time. Set-up time will be a maximum of ten minutes. All
groups must send me the “Sound/Stage Set-Up Request” for their
performances. A form is included in this application. We will set up two musical/drumming
groups at a time - one on stage and the other on the stage area below. This
should help expedite the set-up process.
As in Tahiti, we encourage you to do all your group performances at the same
time and not split them apart throughout the day. Groups entering all their
group categories in one performance, except for Ahuroa , will earn an extra
100 points in their final score. This is per final score, not per judge. The
Mr/Miss San Jose Tahiti is now called the Tane et Vahine Tahiti San Jose. The
event will be held in a formal setting with a dinner and Tahitian entertainment,
at the San Jose DoubleTree Hotel, on Friday, July 1, 2005. Contestants will
be required to model two Tahitian outfits, answer a question from a judge,
and perform a short Ori dance. We also plan a Tahitian fashion show. Next year,
both First-Place winners will receive a $500 scholarship as well as other fabulous
prizes. We are also proud to have the support and assistance of Eric Chandler,
producer, of the Miss Hawaii Pageant in Honolulu. He will assist us in upgrading
the event.
Tickets for the soirée are $65 each. Please see the attached form for
information.
The SJ DoubleTree Hotel (managed by Hilton) will again be offering a very
nice rate of $89 (reg. $349-369)
per room --- up to 4 in a room for the same price! Please confirm your reservations
ASAP since we always sell
out fast during the Fête. This is also the hotel where all the meetings,
workshops, and parties will be held. The
hotel offers free San Jose Airport pick-up (not SF) and is close to the Light
Rail that goes by the Event Center.
On Saturday and Sunday night at the DoubleTree Hotel, we will offer Hawaiian
and Tahitian entertainment
for hotel guests and performers of the Fête. This is a good opportunity
to dance and chat with friends and just
unwind after the Tahiti Fête! Kumus, please let your halau know that
inappropriate behavior at the party will not
be tolerated. We will have security and those drinking will be asked to show
proof-of-age
As soon as I receive your confirmation of participation in the Fête,
update letters will be sent to you as well as
information on dressing rooms, registration, halau tickets, etc. You may pre-order
special halau tickets with
your entry application. All dancers and musicians must have an entry ticket.
For this reason we offer discount
tickets to all participating halaus and their families. Special halau tickets
are $12 a day. All solo entries will be
given free admission to the Fête on Saturday only.
Thank you in advance for your interest and participation in this colorful
and dazzling program. Your part in the
2005 Tahiti Fête of San Jose will help us have a great Anniversary Tahiti
Fête!
