The Ori Tahiti Solo Competition is one of the most exciting parts of Tahiti Fête, giving dancers the spotlight to showcase their skill, endurance, and passion for Tahitian dance.

How It Works

  • Performance Style: Solos are impromptu, performed to live drumming, and last about 1 ½ to 2 minutes.

  • Categories: Divisions are open for both Vahine (women) and Tane (men), beginning with ages 6–10 and extending through adult Masters (36+).

  • Eliminations: Dancers perform in pareo (wrap skirts) without hand-held props. Headpieces are optional. Several dancers share the stage at once.

  • Finals: Selected competitors advance to the finals, where they may wear hipbands or heis up to 4” wide.

Judging Criteria

Performances are evaluated balancing:

  • Technical Skill: Variety and difficulty of traditional steps, stamina, precision, and mastery of the fa’arapu. Competitors are encouraged to demonstrate at least five traditional steps.
  • Artistic Expression: Grace, creativity, body and facial expression, and ability to connect with the rhythm of the drums.

Awards

  • Top four scorers in each category receive awards and cash prizes.

  • Overall Vahine and Tane champions earn special recognition and a grand prize.

The Solo Competition is a true test of skill and artistry, where dancers bring their own interpretation to the stage while honoring the traditions of Tahiti.
